- Charles Lockwood and Robert H. English of the Pacific Sub force, have to be in consideration for one of the 5. Nimitz, Mitscher and Ray Spruance would, in my mind, have to be on the list. Halsey would be 6th or 7th Royal Ingersol did a great job with the Battle of the Atlantic but most people pay little attention to the supply battle that kept England and Russia in the war. Cunningham did very well with what he had. He would have done better had he been able to work with the American TFs. The British carriers held up better but were slower and had smaller capacities. Almost Independence class capacity iirc. Towers deserves mention. Yamamato, Jisaburo Ozawa and Takeo Kurita belong on the list somewhere as well. . If I HAVE to narrow it down I'll go for Nimitz, Spruance, Yamamato, Ozawa, and Lockwood but I'm not sure this can be done objectively as none of them have equivlent jobes or tools.

Top Five Admirals
- No question that Admiral John Towers should be among the top 5 Admirals of WW2. By Nimitz' own admission Towers should be been the first one chosen to be Cincpac after the Pearl Harbor attack. Towers, considered the Father of Naval Aviation, obtained his flag status rising through aviation. He had to fight the black shoe vs. brown shoe mentality his whole career. As a result many black shoes did not like his ascension. Towers early on knew the aircraft carrier was the queen of the flight not the battleship. His Pacific tactics were finally accepted by King and Nimitz the latter part of WW2. Historians have even given others credits for Towers ideas. Nimitz and King had great respect for Towers, but they did resent his way to flag status. They knew he was very competent. Towers has not been given his due and what he accomplished because many blackshoe Admirals didn't want to give the guy credit. History has now shown he was responsible for far more than anybody every realized.
