At the outbreak of World War II the United States possessed a variety of fighters, many of which were inferior to their Axis opposition. As the war progressed, the American aviation industry designed and produced numerous new fighters which aided in gaining air superiority over Europe and the Pacific for the Allies. Several of these became iconic aircraft from the conflict.
