- Notes: One of the best known aircraft of World War I, the Sopwith Camel downed more enemy aircraft, 1,294, than any other Allied fighter. Exceptionally maneuverable, the Sopwith Camel was also difficult to fly. Arriving in 1917, it helped the reclaim the skies over over the Western Front from the German Albatrosses.
