Definition:
A redan is a type of angled fortification with an open back. Shaped like a "V", a redan may be constructed out of a variety of materials and is built with the point facing the enemy. Redans were frequently used as field fortifications. A redan with an obtuse angle was known as a flèche. This type of fortification was used prominently during the Battle of Borodino in 1812.
