Ravelin

By

Definition:

A ravelin is a small, triangular outwork that is placed in front of the main defenses of a fortification. The ravelin is designed to place fire upon attacking troops as they approach the walls of a fortress. As ravelins were outlying defenses, they were designed to ensure that they provided no cover from the fortress' guns if taken by an attacking force.
