From Kennedy Hickman, About.com

Fought July 1-3, 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg saw the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia field 71,699 men. These troops hailed from twelve states. While Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina contributed the most, troops from as far west as Texas took part in the fighting. During the Battle of Gettysburg this force suffered 23,231 casualties.
