Located near Philadelphia, Valley Forge was the encampment site for General George Washington's Continental Army during the winter of 1777/78. Arriving at Valley Forge battered after several defeats, the Continental Army endured a winter of privation and disease. During the encampment, it was drilled and trained into an effective fighting force by the Prussian Baron von Steuben. In 1893, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania moved to protect the site as a state park. As part of the bicentennial celebration in 1976, it was presented to the nation as a gift and made into a national park.
