American Revolution: Battle of Monmouth

Fought in June 1778, the Battle of Monmouth was the Continental Army's first major test after the winter at Valley Forge. The last major engagement in the north, the Battle of Monmouth ended as a draw with the British withdrawing to New York.

American Revolution: Battle of Rhode Island

The Battle of Rhode Island was fought August 29, 1778, during the American Revolution. Moving against British forces at Newport, the Battle of Rhode Island was an early attempt at Franco-American cooperation. In the fighting at the Battle of Rhode Island, the British won a strategic victory.

American Revolution: Battle of Stony Point

The Battle of Stony Point was fought July 16, 1779, during the American Revolution. Moving forward, American light infantry under Brigadier General Anthony Wayne attacked the British position at Stony Point on the Hudson River. In the resulting Battle of Stony Point, Wayne's men captured the position and garrison.

American Revolution: Battle of Savannah

The Battle of Savannah was fought September 16 to October 18, 1779, during the Ameican Revolution. Captured by the British in 1778, Franco-American forces laid siege to Savannah a year later. Attacking at the Battle of Savannah in October, they were repulsed.

American Revolution: Siege of Charleston

The Siege of Charleston was fought March 29 to May 12, 1780, during the American Revolution. Landing near Charleston, British forces under Gen. Sir Henry Clinton laid siege to the city. The Siege of Charleston ended in a British victory when Maj. Gen. Benjamin Lincoln was forced to surrender.

American Revolution: Battle of Waxhaws

The Battle of Waxhaws was fought May 29, 1780, during the American Revolution. Advancing from Charleston, Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton attacked an American column at Waxhaws. Defeating the Americans, Tarleton's men controversially continued to attack after they attempted to surrender.

American Revolution: Battle of Springfield

The Battle of Springfield was fought June 23, 1780, when British forces attacked into northern New Jersey. Advancing towards the American encampment at Morristown, they were met and blocked by Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene. A defensive victory for the Americans, Springfield was the last major battle fought in the North.

American Revolution: Battle of Camden

The Battle of Camden was fought August 16, 1780, during the American Revolution. Sent south after the fall of Charleston, Major General Horatio Gates engaged British forces near Camden, SC. In the resulting Battle of Camden, Gates' army was routed.

American Revolution: Battle of Kings Mountain

The Battle of Kings Mountain was fought October 7, 1780, in backwoods South Carolina. Arriving at Kings Mountain, Loyalist militia under Major Patrick Ferguson was attacked by American forces. Fighting on the slopes of Kings Mountain, the Americans were able to overwhelm and destroy Ferguson's command.

The Battle of Cowpens saw American troops rout the forces of the notorious Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton. Fought on January 17, 1781, the Battle of Cowpens featured a double envelopment by Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan's small army which crushed the British. A key victory in the southern campaign, Cowpens ended a string of British wins in the region.

American Revolution: Battle of Guilford Court House

The Battle of Guilford Court House was fought on March 15, 1781, and saw British forces win a bloody, pyrrhic victory over American forces. Attacking Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene's position, Maj. Gen. Lord Charles Cornwallis was able to drive the Americans from Guilford Court House but lost over a quarter of his men in the process.

American Revolution: Battle of Groton Heights

On September 6, 1781, American forces were defeated at the Battle of Groton Heights. Raiding New London, CT, British troops, led by traitor Benedict Arnold, landed and burned the town. Advancing on Fort Griswold, the Battle of Groton Heights saw the British storm and capture the fort against American opposition.

The Battle of Blue Licks was one of the final battles of the American Revolution. Fought August 19, 1782, in Kentucky, the battle saw an American frontiersmen, including Daniel Boone, engage British and Native American forces. The fighting resulted in a British victory when the Kentuckians were routed.

American Revolution: Battle of Eutaw Springs

The Battle of Eutaw Springs was fought September 8, 1781, during the American Revolution. Encountering Colonel Alexander Stewart at Eutaw Springs, Major General Nathanael Green elected to give battle. In a back and forth contest, neither side gained a decisive advantage and the Battle of Eutaw Springs effectively ended in a draw.
