January 28, 1846 - British forces win a decisive victory at the Battle of Aliwal. With Sikh forces threatening his rear, Gen. Sir Hugh Gough detached a force under Gen. Sir Harry Smith to intercept the enemy. After beating the Sikhs to Ludhiana, a reinforced Smith turned and met the enemy along the Sutlej River at Aliwal. Attacking the Sikh left, Smith turned their flank and in a series of attacks collapsed their line forcing them to flee the field. The victory set the stage for Gough's final attack on the main Sikh army which culminated in the favorable Treaty of Lahore. Share your thoughts on Smith's performance.
