Wars of the Roses: Lancastrians Upset at Blore Heath

Tuesday September 22, 2009

September 23, 1459 - A smaller Yorkist force wins at the Battle of Blore Heath. As the Wars of the Roses began to heat up after several years of uneasy peace, both the Lancastrians and Yorkists began raising forces for combat. Summoning his followers to Ludlow Castle, Richard, Duke of York intended to begin operations against King Henry VI. Learning that the Earl of Salisbury was moving towards Ludlow, Queen Margaret dispatched a larger force under Baron Audley to intercept him. Forming on Blore Heath, Audley intended to ambush the approaching Yorkists but was discovered. Unwilling to attack, Salisbury used a fake retreat to lure the Lancastrians into assaulting him across a wide creek. In the resulting fight, Audley was killed and the Lancastrians routed. Had Audley's men not been discovered or lured from their positions, how would this battle have ended?
