Indian Wars: Geronimo Surrenders

Tuesday September 4, 2007

September 4, 1886 - After successfully evading 5,000 US troops for over a year, Geronimo (left) and his band of Chiricahua Apache are cornered at Skeleton Canyon, AZ and forced to surrender to General Nelson A. Miles. Born in 1829, Geronimo became one of the most famous Native American warriors of the 19th century and was renowned for his elusiveness. Feared by both American and Mexican settlers, Geronimo raided across Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico between 1858 and 1886. After his capture, Geronimo became a celebrity and appeared at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis and rode in President Theodore Roosevelt's 1905 inaugural parade.
