American Revolution: Battle of Bennington

Thursday August 16, 2007

August 16, 1777 - Fighting near Bennington, VT, American forces defeat two Hessian columns along the Walloomsac River. Beginning as a raid on the colonial supply depot at Bennington, the battle resulted when Lt. Colonel Friedrich Baum's force was attacked by New Hampshire militia under General John Stark. Fighting from an earthen redoubt, Baum's men valiantly held out until their ammunition was exhaused. After accepting the their surrender, Stark's men were attacked by a second Hessian column under Lt. Colonel Heinrich von Breymann. Reinforced by Colonel Seth Warner's (right) Vermont militia, Stark was able to drive von Breymann from the field.
