Civil War: David G. Farragut Promoted to Rear Admiral

July 16, 1862 - In reward for his stunning capture of New Orleans, Flag Officer David G. Farragut (left) is promoted the newly created rank of rear admiral. Farragut will also become the US Navy's first vice admiral (1864) and admiral (1866). Prior to the Civil War, the US Navy had avoided creating the ranks as they felt they were to reminiscent of European aristocracy. This article provides an overview of Farragut's groundbreaking career.
