Civil War: War in the East, 1863-1865
We wrap up our overview of the American Civil War with a look at the last two years of fighting in the Eastern theater. Following his triumphs in the West, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant came east in March 1864, and launched his Overland Campaign to destroy Gen. Robert E. Lee's army and take the Confederate capital of Richmond. In this article, follow the action as the fighting rages from the Wilderness to Petersburg (left), ultimately culminating in Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
