Quasi-War: Congress Rescinds Treaties!

Saturday July 7, 2007

July 7, 1798 - The US Congress rescinds all treaties with France and orders the US Navy to seek out and destroy French privateers and warships. Resulting from diplomatic breakdowns regarding past treaties, the Jay Treaty between the US and Great Britain, and issues of American neutrality during the Wars of the French Revolution, the Quasi-War was the United States' first undeclared war.

Fought entirely at sea, the new US Navy acquitted itself well capturing 85 French ships while only losing one of its own. The fighting was highlighted by the frigate USS Constellation's (right) capture of the French frigate L'Insurgente and successful engagement against the frigate La Vengeance. This article provides an overview of this unique conflict.
