Strategy & Tactics: Fabian Strategy

Friday June 22, 2007

A popular strategic approach for smaller, weaker states, Fabian Strategy has its roots in the Second Punic War between Carthage and Rome. Named for Roman Dictator Quintus Fabius Maximus, the strategy relies on avoiding major battles with the goal of wearing down the enemy and breaking their will to continue the fight. This strategy has been used successfully several times through the centuries including by George Washington (right) during the American Revolution and by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. This article provides a deeper look at Fabian strategy and its origins.
