World War II: M4 Sherman Tank
One of the best known tanks of World War II, the M4 Sherman (left) formed the backbone of American armor forces during the conflict. While initially superior to many German tanks, it later found its match in the German Panther and Tiger. Employed by most Allied nations, it saw combat in all theaters and more than 50,000 were produced. Simply designed and easily produced and repaired, the Sherman was symbolic of American industrial might. This article explores history of this legendary fighting machine.
